The Colony of Natal was a place in south-eastern Africa. It started as a small area of land near the coast. Later, it grew much larger after it joined with the land of the Zulu people.

This area was a British colony for many years. In 1910, it joined three other colonies to form the Union of South Africa. Today, we know this place as the KwaZulu-Natal province. It has a very long and busy history of many different people living there.

Many different groups of people moved to Natal at different times. First, men like Francis Farewell arrived in 1823 to trade. Later, a group of Boers arrived and made the Natalia Republic. In 1843, the British government took control to make it a colony.

Many people also moved there from Europe between 1848 and 1851. Around that time, the population of settlers grew to over 8,000 people. This brought new schools and churches to the region.

Farming changed the way people lived in the colony. In the 1860s, people started a large sugar cane industry.

The farm owners needed many workers for these large plantations. Because they could not find enough local workers, they brought thousands of people from India. These workers were called indentured labourers. Because of this, the city of Durban became a home for many Indian people. It became the largest group of Indians living outside of India.

New discoveries brought even more change and excitement. In 1884, people found gold in the nearby Transvaal land. This caused a gold rush that brought many new people to the area.

People used Natal as a path to reach the gold mines. They traveled by bullock-waggon, which took about six weeks. This made the port of Durban very busy with trade. The colony also began to use coal from new mines.

To help all this trade move faster, the people built new things. They built railways to connect the different areas. One part of the railway reached Ladysmith in 1886. By 1891, the tracks reached all the way to the Transvaal border.

They also worked hard to make the Port of Durban better. This helped ships bring goods in and out of the colony. All these changes helped Natal grow into a very important place.
