The name Enugu comes from the Igbo language. It means "hill top." Even so, the city sits at the foot of a large slope. This slope is called an escarpment. The land around the city has many hills and rivers. Six large rivers flow through the city. The largest is the Ekulu River. It helps provide water to the people living there.

Enugu is famous for its coal. A long time ago, people found coal deep under the ground. This discovery changed the city.

Huge mines were built to get the coal. Many people moved to the city to work in these mines. A railway was even built to carry the coal to the sea.

Today, Enugu is the capital of Enugu State. It is a busy place with many people. Some people call it the "Capital of Igboland."
