These neighbors include places like Niger State to the northwest and Benue State to the east. Because it sits in the middle of so many other lands, it acts like a bridge. The state was officially formed on 27 August 1991. It was created by joining parts of three other states together. This makes it a very important part of the Nigerian map.

Kogi is often called the "Confluence State." This name comes from a very cool natural event where two big rivers meet. The River Niger flows from the northwest and the River Benue flows from the northeast. They meet in the center of the state near the capital city, Lokoja.

History has shaped Kogi in many ways over hundreds of years. Long ago, the land was divided into many different areas. Some were small villages, while others were large empires. For example, the Nupe Kingdom held much of the western part until the early 1800s. The eastern side was part of the ancient Igala Kingdom. Later, British explorers arrived in the 1900s. They made Lokoja the capital of a place called the Northern Nigeria Protectorate. Even the name "Nigeria" was once spoken on the hills of Mount Patti in Lokoja.

Many different groups of people call Kogi home. You will hear many languages like Ebira, Igala, Yoruba, and Nupe. People follow many different faiths, including Islam and Christianity. About 45% of the people are Muslim and 40% are Christian. Most people in the state work in agriculture. They grow many things like coffee, cocoa, yams, and rice. They also raise animals like cattle, goats, and sheep. The state also has big industries, such as a huge steel company and a large cement factory.

There are many exciting things for visitors to do in Kogi. You can go hiking on hills and beautiful terrains. Some people visit Mount Patti or look at old colonial buildings.
