It sits right next to the Republic of the Niger to the north and west. The state also shares borders with Zamfara to the east and Kebbi to the south. The capital city is Sokoto, which is the largest city in the area. This city sits near where the Sokoto and Rima rivers meet. As of 2022, more than 6.3 million people live in this state. It is a very important place for Islamic learning in Nigeria.

The weather in Sokoto is mostly hot and dry. The state is part of the Sahel, a region with sandy plains and hills.

Most days are warm, but the heat gets even higher from February to April. During the rainy season from June to October, people see daily showers. These rains are not like the heavy tropical storms found elsewhere. From late October to February, a wind called the Harmattan blows. This wind carries dust from the Sahara Desert across the land. The dust can dim the sunlight and settle inside houses.

Sokoto has a very long and interesting history. In the 19th century, it was an important part of the Fulani Empire. Later, around the year 1900, the British took control of the area. At that time, Sokoto covered the entire northwest corner of Nigeria. In 1967, the region was called the Northwestern State. The current Sokoto State was officially created in 1976. Since then, other states like Kebbi and Zamfara have split off from it.

Farming is the most important way of life for people here. Over 80% of the population works in agriculture. They use the rich soil near the Sokoto-Rima river system to grow food. Common crops include millet, rice, corn, and beans. Most people in the state are Sunni Muslims. They often speak Hausa or Fulfulde. Other groups speak languages like Zarma, Tuareg, or Kamuku. The state is divided into twenty-three different Local Government Areas.

Learning and religion are big parts of life in Sokoto. The city was once the seat of the Sokoto Caliphate. Today, the Sultan is the spiritual leader for many Muslims in Nigeria. There are also many places for higher learning. These include Usman Danfodiyo University and Sokoto State University. People use many roads to travel through the state. One major road, the A1, connects the area to the country of Niger. This helps connect the people of Sokoto to the rest of the world.
