It sits near the border of the country Niger. To the west, it touches Zamfara State. To the east, you will find Kano and Jigawa states. Kaduna State sits along its southern edge. The capital city of this state is called Katsina. People often call this place the "Home of Hospitality."

The land here is mostly a tropical grassland called savanna. In the north, the land turns into a semi-desert called Sahelian savanna. There are two main seasons: a rainy season and a dry season. The state gets about 791.61 millimeters of rain each year. This rain happens during about 54.63 rainy days. Large rivers like the Bunsuru, Gada, and Sokoto flow through the area. These rivers are very important for farms and homes.

Katsina has a very long and interesting history. Long ago, it was part of the Hausa Bakwai states. During the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the cities of Daura and Katsina became famous. They were big centers for trade and Islamic learning. Later, in the early nineteenth century, the area became part of the Sokoto Caliphate. During the British colonial era, it was part of the Northern Nigeria Protectorate. Finally, the state was officially created in 1987.

Many different people live in Katsina State today. There are about 9.3 million residents as of 2023. The Hausa people are the largest ethnic group. Most people follow the faith of Islam, which is about 79% of the population. About 20% of people follow Christianity. There are also small groups who follow traditionalist religions. The state is divided into 34 different local government areas.

Life in Katsina relies a lot on the land. Many people work in agriculture to grow food. They grow crops like millet, sorghum, maize, rice, groundnuts, and cotton. People also raise animals such as cattle, goats, and sheep. Learning is also a big part of the community. There are many schools, like Umaru Musa Yar'adua University.
