This history is tied to its role as a center for trade and religion.

The weather in Sokoto is often very hot. The warmest months are February, March, and April. During these times, the temperature can go above 40 °C. The highest temperature ever recorded there was 45 °C. There is a rainy season from June to October with daily showers. From late October to February, a dry wind called the harmattan blows. Sokoto has a very long and interesting history. It was founded as a military camp called a ribat in 1809. A leader named Shehu Usmanu Dan Fodio helped start the Sokoto Caliphate there. In the 1820s, the city was very wealthy and powerful. An explorer named Hugh Clapperton visited in 1827 and saw this prosperity. Later, in 1853, another explorer named Heinrich Barth visited the area. He estimated the population was only about 20,000 to 22,000 people back then.
