It sits near the confluence of the Sokoto River and the Rima River. The city serves as the capital of Sokoto State. It is also an important seat of Islamic learning. The Sultan of Sokoto leads the caliphate. He is the effective spiritual leader for Nigerian Muslims. The city's name is an anglicized version of Sakkwato. This name likely comes from the Arabic word "sooq," which means market.

The climate in Sokoto is classified as hot semi-arid. This is known as the BSh type in the Köppen system. The city is located in the dry Sahel region. It is surrounded by sandy savannah and isolated hills. The weather features two major seasons: wet and dry. The dry season begins in October and lasts until April or June. The wet season starts in May and ends by September or October. During the rainy season, showers are a daily occurrence. However, these showers are rarely as torrential as in other tropical regions.

Temperature plays a massive role in life in Sokoto. It is one of the hottest cities in Nigeria. The warmest months are February through April. During this time, daytime temperatures can exceed 40 °C. The highest temperature ever recorded in the city was 45 °C. From late October to February, the harmattan wind dominates the weather. This is a dry, cold, and dusty wind from the Sahara. The dust dims the sunlight and reduces temperatures significantly. This wind can also cause health problems due to airborne dust.

Sokoto has a complex and deep history. It was founded as a ribat, or military camp, in 1809. This happened when Shehu Usmanu Dan Fodio was at Sifawa. The city later became the capital of the Sokoto Caliphate. In the 1820s, the city reached a peak of prosperity.

The explorer Hugh Clapperton visited in 1827 and noted this wealth. However, by 1853, the explorer Heinrich Barth found the city dilapidated. He estimated the population was only between 20,000 and 22,000 people.

The geography of the region supports large-scale agriculture. The topography is dominated by the Hausa plain. The Sokoto-Rima river system dissects this plain. This system provides rich alluvial soil for growing crops. The floodplains are the lifeline for local farmers. Major crops include millet, guinea corn, and beans. Sokoto is also a major producer of onions in Nigeria. Other crops include maize, rice, sesame, and vegetables like tomatoes.

The open savannah is also free of the tse-tse fly. This makes the land excellent for animal husbandry.

Economic life in Sokoto is very diverse. Over 80% of the inhabitants practice some form of agriculture. The city is famous for trading sheepskins and cattle hides. Leather crafts are a significant export for the region.

Livestock production is also very high. Sokoto ranks second in the country for animal population. The nation has well over eight million animals. Besides farming, people work in blacksmithing, weaving, and dyeing. The city also has mineral resources like limestone and gypsum. A cement works opened in the area in 2022.

Modern Sokoto is a large and busy urban center. The city has a population of approximately 2.5 million people. The broader Sokoto state has a projected population of 3.7 million. Most residents are Fulani or Hausa. They speak Hausa as a common language. The city is a junction for many roads. These roads connect Gobir in the north to Kebbi in the south. While public transport is limited, there is an all-female garage. This garage trains young women in vehicle maintenance. This initiative supports local empowerment in the city.
