It is located in the Western region of the country. The city serves as a major hub for transportation and commerce. It is classified under the North-Central geopolitical zone. However, sociologists and historians consider it a Yoruba city. As of the 2006 census, the population reached 777,667 people. This makes it the 7th largest city in Nigeria by population.

The history of Ilorin involves complex shifts in power. The Yoruba people founded the city in the late 18th century. It functioned as a provincial military headquarters for the Oyo Empire. In 1817, a Kakanfo named Afonja rebelled against the empire. He was supported by Alimi, an itinerant Islamic preacher. Their alliance eventually broke down due to religious tensions. Afonja refused to convert to Islam and was eventually assassinated. In 1823, Alimi's son, Abd al-Salam, pledged allegiance to the Sokoto Caliphate.

Conflicts shaped the borders and the future of the region. Around 1835, the Oyo Empire and its Borgawa allies attacked Ilorin. They hoped to reclaim their former glory, but they were decisively defeated. This defeat marked the end of the Oyo Empire. Later, Abd al-Salam led a jihad toward the sea. He was stopped at Oshogbo in 1840 by the Ibadan army. During the 19th century, Ilorin became a major trade node. It connected the Hausa and Yoruba people through commerce.

British influence changed the administrative structure of the city. Ilorin resisted British rule for a time. However, the Royal Niger Company occupied the city in 1897. By 1900, the lands were part of the British Northern Nigeria Protectorate. In 1967, Nigeria subdivided its administrative regions. Ilorin then became part of West Central State, which later became Kwara State. Today, the city is a cosmopolitan center. It is inhabited by the Yoruba, but the traditional ruler has Fulani heritage. Many other groups live there, including the Nupe, Bariba, Kanuri, Igbo, and Hausa.

Religion plays a massive role in the culture of Ilorin. The city has a strong Islamic influence.

These include the Catholic, Anglican, and Methodist churches. Notable Pentecostal churches like the Redeemed Christian Church of God also exist. Some Christian churches started schools that Muslim schools later adopted. The city also hosts various cultural and religious ceremonies throughout the year.
