It serves as the capital of Kaduna State. The city is also a vital trade center for the region. It acts as a gateway to many northern Nigerian states. This importance comes from its large road and rail networks. The city sits directly on the banks of the Kaduna River. Many people consider it a central hub for transportation and commerce.

The name "Kaduna" has two possible origins. One theory links it to the Hausa word "Kadduna." This word means "crocodiles" in the Hausa language. Another theory connects the name to the Gbagyi language. In Gbagyi, the name "Odna" means "river."

Sir Frederick Lugard was the first British governor of Northern Nigeria. He chose this specific site for development. He wanted to be near the Lagos-Kano Railway. In 1917, Kaduna became the capital of the Northern Region. It held this political status until 1967. In 1976, the administration created new states. This led to the creation of Kaduna State. The state was formed from the Zaria and Katsina provinces. In 1991, the state structure changed again. Katsina became its own state. The old Zaria Province then became the new Kaduna State.
