As a center of commerce, Khamis Mushayt is highly important. It is the fourth largest trading center in Saudi Arabia. The city also serves as a major military hub. It hosts the King Khalid Air Base, or KMX. This base features a paved runway for aircraft. Engineers from the US Army and Air Force built the base. They worked on its design and construction during the 1960s and 1970s. The base includes specific service facilities for F-15 fighter jets.

The city has a very specific climate type. It is classified as a hot desert climate. Scientists use the Köppen climate classification system for this. This specific type is labeled BWh. The weather in the area is also very close to a hot semi-desert climate. This is known as the BSh classification. The surrounding region often has a mild climate. This helps support the many farms near the city. These farms produce various agricultural crops for the area.

Khamis Mushayt has a long and storied history. The city has used this name since the 1760s. The name comes from the Al-Mushayt family name. It refers to a man named Mushayt who protected the city. He was also known as Mushayt Ibn Salem. He was the head of the Shahran tribe. He also acted as the guardian of the local market. This connection to the tribe remains a key part of the city's identity.

The population of the city has changed drastically over time. Before the 1970s, Khamis Mushayt was a very small town. It had a population of less than 50,000 people. Since then, the number of residents has grown immensely. By 2017, the estimated metro population reached 1,353,000 people. This makes it the fifth-largest city in the entire country. It is larger than most cities, following only Riyadh, Jeddah, Mecca, and Medina.

Visitors to the city can explore several notable landmarks. There are many traditional markets known as souks. The Khamis Souk and the Silver Souq are two famous examples. The Silver Souq is well known for its silver jewellery. There is also a Spice Souk for different goods. For lodging, people stay at the Mushayt Palace Hotel or the Trident Hotel. Other important local sites include the Al-Hayat Hospital and the Khamis Mushayt Mosque.

History shows how the city played a role in global events. During the Gulf War in 1991, the airbase was very active. The US Air Force maintained a base at King Khalid Air Base. They used this location to launch bombers. These aircraft were sent toward Baghdad. This shows how the city's geography and military facilities connect it to wider international history. The transformation from a small village to a massive city is visible in its growth.
