The geography of the area is shaped by water and tides. Much of the city drains into the Chesapeake Bay. This happens through the Lynnhaven River and its many smaller tributaries. The city is connected to other areas by the Chesapeake Bay Bridge–Tunnel. This massive structure was once the longest bridge–tunnel complex in the world. It remained so until the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge opened in 2018. The city also features several state parks and protected beaches. These areas help preserve the natural coastal environment.

Before English settlers arrived, the Chesepian people lived here.

They were an indigenous group in the Tidewater region. They likely spoke an Algonquian language. The Chesepian were part of the Powhatan Confederacy. This was a loose group of many different tribes. They lived in the area that now includes Norfolk and Chesapeake. In 1607, English colonists arrived by sea. They made their first landing at Cape Henry.

They named the cape after Henry Frederick, the Prince of Wales. These colonists eventually moved inland to found Jamestown. One early settler was Adam Thoroughgood.

He was an indentured servant who became a leader in the colony.

The modern identity of the city grew from a small resort. In 1883, a railroad arrived at the coast. This changed everything for the local economy. A hotel opened near a small community called Seatack. The area became a popular destination for seasonal travelers. The town was officially incorporated in 1906. In 1963, the city underwent a major change. The city of Virginia Beach and Princess Anne County merged. This consolidation created the large, modern city we see today.

Urban growth has created new challenges for the city. There is very little clear land left for new buildings in the north. This is because of an urban growth boundary called the Green Line. This line separates the urban north from the rural south. Development in residential areas can also affect the military base. For example, a Navy jet crashed into an apartment complex in 2012. The city also faces risks from rising sea levels and climate change. During Hurricane Matthew, heavy rain flooded over 2,000 homes.

This has led to important legal debates about how cities should adapt to nature.

Virginia Beach is a complex mix of nature and industry. It functions as a suburb within the larger Hampton Roads area. It is a place where military life, tourism, and history meet. The city's population is very representative of Virginia's income and education levels. It remains a vital center for the Mid-Atlantic region. From the historic homes of early settlers to the busy boardwalk, the city has many layers.
