Lafia is a major city located in the North Central region of Nigeria. It serves as the capital of Nasarawa State. The city is also the headquarters for the Lafia Emirate Council. According to the 2021 census, the population of the city reached 509,300 inhabitants. Because so many different groups live there, people often call it a "miniature Nigeria." It functions as a vital administrative, educational, and trading center for the region.

The history of the city dates back to the late 18th century. A man named Muhammadu Dunama founded the town. He chose a site located south of Shabu village. In the late 19th century, Lafia became the capital of a prominent local chiefdom. During the rule of Mohamman Agwai from 1881 to 1903, the local market grew significantly. It became one of the most important markets in the Benue Valley. A trade route was also established to Loko, which is a port on the Benue River.

Political structures in Lafia have changed many times over the years. In 1903, the British recognized Chief Musa as the first emir of the area. The emirate was a major part of the Lafia Division within the Benue province. Later, the city became part of the Benue-Plateau state in 1967. By 1976, it was allocated to Plateau state. Today, the Lafia Emirate is led by the 17th emir, Hon. Justice Sidi Bage Muhammad I JSC rtd. He comes from the Dallah Dunama royal family. He succeeded the longest-reigning emir, Isa Mustapha Agwai I, who ruled from 1976 to 2019.

The people of Lafia come from many different ethnic backgrounds. The original inhabitants include the Kanuri, Fulani Gwandara, Alago, and Migilli (Koro) groups. There are also very large populations of Hausa people living in the city. This diversity is due to the hospitable nature of the local people. Many residents work in agriculture and trade. The city is a collecting point for sesame seeds and soybeans. It is also a trading center for yams, sorghum, millet, and cotton. Some inhabitants practice traditional cotton weaving and dyeing. Others, such as the Fulani herdsmen, focus on livestock farming.

Lafia is a significant center for higher education and religion. The city hosts the Federal University of Lafia. Other institutions include the Nasarawa State University Faculty of Agriculture Lafia Campus. There is also the Isa Mustapha Agwai I Polytechnic and the College of Agriculture Lafia. For medical training, the city has the School of Nursing and Midwifery and the School of Health Technology. Religious life is also central to the community. The Lafia Central Mosque, also known as the Nasarawa State Mosque, was built in 1971. The St Williams Cathedral is located along Jos Road. This cathedral serves as the headquarters for the Lafia diocese.
