It is the eighth-largest country on the African continent. It is also the 23rd largest country in the world. Because it is landlocked, Mali has no direct access to an ocean. It is surrounded by several neighbors. Algeria sits to the north. Niger is to the east. Mauritania is to the northwest. Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast are to the south. Guinea and Senegal border the west.

The geography of Mali changes significantly from north to south. The northern borders extend deep into the Sahara Desert. This region is extremely dry and sandy. Most of the population lives in the southern part of the country. This area is part of the Sudanian savanna. It is much greener than the northern desert. The Niger and Senegal rivers flow through this southern region.

Mali has a very long history of human habitation. Rock art in the Sahara suggests people lived there since 10,000 BC. Early ceramics were discovered at a site called Ounjougou. These date to about 9,400 BC. This site is believed to be an instance of independent pottery invention. Farming began by 5000 BC. People used iron by around 500 BC. Early cities like Dia and Djenne-Djenno also developed along the Niger River.

The region was once home to three powerful West African empires. These were the Ghana, Mali, and Songhai empires. They controlled the trans-Saharan trade. This trade involved gold, salt, and other goods. The Mali Empire reached its peak in the 14th century. Its emperor, Mansa Musa, was believed to be one of the wealthiest people in history. The city of Timbuktu became a world center for Islamic culture and education.

The Songhai Empire eventually absorbed the Mali Empire in 1468. Later, a Saadian army defeated the Songhai in 1591. This event marked the end of the region's role as a major trading crossroads. During the late 19th century, France took control of the area. It became known as French Sudan. Mali finally gained independence in 1960. It was originally part of the Mali Federation with Senegal. After Senegal withdrew, the Republic of Mali was established.

Today, Mali has a population of about 23.29 million people. Nearly 47.19% of the population is under the age of 15. The capital and largest city is Bamako. There are 13 official languages in the country. Bambara is the most commonly spoken language.
