The Mali War is a long and ongoing conflict in West Africa. It began in January 2012 with a rebellion in the northern part of the country.

Many people in the north, like the Tuareg, felt ignored by the central government. They wanted more control over their own land. A group called the MNLA fought for a region they called Azawad.

This group wanted independence or more power for their people. They felt that mining and climate change had made life very hard for them.

How the conflict changed depended on which groups were working together. At first, the MNLA joined with religious groups called jihadists. These groups included Ansar Dine, AQIM, and MOJWA.

They all fought against the government at the same time. However, these groups had very different ideas for the future. They could not agree on how to rule. Soon, the MNLA and the jihadists began fighting each other. The jihadist groups eventually won control of most of the northern territory.

History moved quickly during the first year of the war. On March 22, 2012, soldiers took control of the government in a coup.

This happened because leaders were not handling the northern crisis well. During the confusion, rebels captured the cities of Timbuktu, Kidal, and Gao.

On April 6, 2012, the MNLA declared independence for Azawad. Other groups, like the African Union, said this was not valid. The government then asked other countries for help to take back the land.

Many people and nations stepped in to help Mali. In January 2013, the French military began operations to fight the jihadists.

With help from France and African nations, the government regained most of the territory. Leaders tried to make peace with the Algiers Accords in June 2015.

These deals aimed to help the north grow and include rebels in the army. However, new groups like JNIM formed in 2017. Fighting continued between different coalitions and splinter groups.

Today, the situation in Mali remains very difficult. In 2020 and 2021, more military coups changed the leadership again.

New groups like the Wagner Group arrived to help the military. This caused many other countries, like France and Canada, to withdraw their troops.

Tensions grew even more when the UN group MINUSMA left in 2023. The country still faces many disputes over control and peace agreements.
