It serves as the capital for the Asyut Governorate. The city sits right along the banks of the Nile river. It is located between two mountain ranges that are about 600 meters high. This location makes it the driest city in all of Egypt. The weather here can be very extreme. Summers are very hot and can exceed 40 degrees Celsius. In the winter, nights are chilly enough for frost to form.

This city has a very long and busy history. Long ago, around 3100 BC, ancient Asyut was a capital city. During that time, it was part of the Thirteenth Nome. The people of ancient Egypt worshipped gods like Anubis there. In the Graeco-Roman era, the city was known as Lycopolis. This name means "wolf city" in Greek.

This name comes from a tradition about wolves helping to protect the land. Archaeologists have even found the mummies of wolves in rocks near the city.

Many different groups of people have lived in Asyut through the ages. During the Middle Ages, the city was a place for many churches and monasteries. It was also a stop on the 40 Day Road. This was a path used by great camel caravans. At its peak in the 14th century, these caravans had up to 12,000 camels.

In more recent times, the city has become a major center for the Coptic Christian community. About 50% of the people living there are Coptic Christians.

Today, Asyut is a busy place with about 528,000 people. It is a center for learning because it has Assiut University. The city is also important for energy and industry. It is the end point for both oil and gas pipelines. There is also a large dam across the Nile nearby. This dam was built in 1902 to help create electricity. The city stays connected to other places by roads, railways, and an airport.

Asyut is well known for the beautiful things its people make. The city has a large textile industry. It is one of the only places in the world that still makes special shawls with silver appliqué-work. People there also create fine pottery and lovely rugs. They are also skilled at making inlaid woodwork. You can see the city's history in its many buildings and monuments. Some old palaces are even being turned into museums for people to visit.
