Her time as a ruler was quite short. She ruled for three years, 10 months, and 24 days. This period was a major turning point for her people. When her reign ended, the Twelfth Dynasty also came to an end.

She took the throne after the death of Amenemhat IV. Some historians think they were brother and sister. It is not certain if they were married, too.

There are many ideas about why she became king. Perhaps Amenemhat IV had no sons to follow him. Some people think she might have taken the throne from others. Two men named Sobekhotep I and Sonbef were called sons of Amenemhat. However, it is not clear if they were the true heirs.

Sobekneferu used special titles to show her power. These titles were usually for male kings. She changed them slightly to show she was a woman.

She was also the first ruler to use the name of a god. She chose the crocodile god named Sobek. Her own name included his name. Her chosen royal name was Sobekkare. This connected her to the god Sobek and the sun god Re.

We know about her through a few special objects. There are some partial statues of her face. A small cylinder seal in the British Museum shows her name. This seal is made of steatite and is quite small.

There is also an inscribed scarab in a museum. In the Faiyum region, she helped finish a building called the Labyrinth. This was a large temple for Amenemhat III. A writing at a fortress called Kumma shows she ruled all of Egypt.

Her story helps us understand how Egypt changed. Her rule led into a time called the Second Intermediate Period. This new time had many different rulers. Some of them also used the name of the god Sobek.
