Amenemhat III was a powerful pharaoh of ancient Egypt. He belonged to the Twelfth Dynasty during the Middle Kingdom. This era is often called a golden age for Egypt. He was the son of the king Senusret III. For twenty years, the two men shared the throne together. This special way of ruling is called a co-regency.

Because his father had already made Egypt stable, Amenemhat III could focus on growth. He helped the country reach its highest point in culture and wealth.

To build his many monuments, the king needed many materials. He sent large groups of people on mining expeditions. They traveled to the Sinai peninsula to find copper and turquoise. Other groups looked for amethyst in Wadi el-Hudi. They also collected red granite from Aswan and diorite from Nubia.

Some of these mining sites became permanent places where people lived. These resources allowed him to create beautiful objects and huge buildings. He even sent ships to the Land of Punt to find incense.

Amenemhat III was a very busy builder. He focused much of his work on a region called Faiyum. In this area, he worked on projects to help with water and irrigation. He built a temple for the god Sobek there. He also built a chapel for the goddess Renenutet.

He even put up two giant statues of himself in Biahmu. These projects helped the land and honored the gods.

This king is famous for his unique pyramids. He built two large pyramids for himself. One is located at Dahshur and the other is at Hawara. He was the first king in a very long time to build more than one.

Near his pyramid at Hawara, his daughter Neferuptah also had a pyramid. This shows how important his family was to his legacy. His reign lasted for at least 45 years.

His family continued to rule after him. Toward the end of his long reign, he shared power with his son, Amenemhat IV. This was another co-regency to help the next leader. After Amenemhat IV, a woman named Sobekneferu became the ruler. This shows how the Twelfth Dynasty continued through his children.
