Some experts believe she was more than just a queen. They think she might have been the first female monarch in history. She may have ruled as a pharaoh in her own right. This would make her a very special leader in the ancient world.

Her power showed in how she managed important tasks. Neithhotep may have organized a big trip through the Wadi Ameyra. This place is on the Sinai Peninsula. The trip was meant to find ore and other materials.

Such a big job usually required the power of a pharaoh. She might have ruled as a regent for a young child. A regent is someone who rules when a king is too small. This helped keep the royal family in charge.

For a long time, historians made a mistake about her. They thought Neithhotep was actually an unknown king. Her tomb was a huge mastaba made of mudbricks.

Her name also appeared on royal seals. These seals used a symbol called a serekh. In those days, people mostly used that symbol for men. As writing improved, scholars realized she was a woman of high rank. They found her name on clay seals and stone bowls.

Many facts help us learn about her life. Her name was found in places like Helwan, Abydos, and Naqada. She held titles like Foremost of the Women.

Her name also linked her to the goddess Neith. This goddess was a lady of war and hunting. Neithhotep's large tomb was found by Jacques de Morgan in 1897. Later, John Garstang found hundreds of objects in her burial area.

Neithhotep helps us understand how early Egypt worked. In the First Dynasty, royal mothers often helped lead the land. They helped start royal families. Her story is similar to another queen named Meritneith. Both women held great power for their families.
