Menes was a very important leader in ancient Egypt. Many old stories say he was the first pharaoh. He is credited with uniting Upper and Lower Egypt into one kingdom. This act started the First Dynasty of Egypt.

Because of this, he is seen as a founding figure. He is a bit like Romulus was to ancient Rome.

Historians are still trying to figure out who Menes really was. There is a big debate about his true identity. Some experts think Menes was actually a ruler named Narmer. Other scholars believe he was a king named Hor-Aha.

An ivory label from Naqada shows the name Aha near a symbol for Menes. This makes the link between these names very interesting to study.

Different clues from the past give us different ideas. One clue is a seal impression found at Abydos. This seal shows the name Narmer next to a symbol for Menes. Some say this proves they were the same person. However, other experts think the symbol might name a prince instead.

This means Menes could have been the successor to Narmer.

Many famous writers have told stories about this leader. The historian Manetho wrote that Menes led an army to win glory. Another writer named Herodotus said Menes founded the city of Memphis. He even said Menes built a levee to move the Nile River.

Some stories say Menes even invented writing in Egypt. Other legends say he once rode a crocodile to stay safe while hunting. These stories show how much people thought of him.

We can use math to guess when he lived. Many scholars today think he ruled around 3200 to 3030 BC. In the past, people guessed many different dates. One person thought he lived in 5867 BC. Another thought it was much later in 2320 BC.
