He was a very important leader who brought wealth to his people. He was known by many names, such as Hor-Den or Dewen. His name likely meant "he who brings the water." Den was also called the "King of Upper and Lower Egypt." To show this, he wore a special double crown. This crown was both red and white.

It showed he ruled the whole land.

Den helped change how people lived and worked. He established many customs for the royal court. These traditions were used by kings for a long time. He also helped start a new way to use numbers. Before Den, people used simple signs for years. After his reign, Egyptians used hieroglyphs to count years. This helped them track things like tax collections.

It made keeping records much easier.

Den's life began with a shared throne. When he was young, he could not rule alone. His mother, Queen Merneith, ruled as a regent for several years. She was a very important leader in her own right. After she helped him, Den ruled by himself for many years. Some historians think he ruled for 42 years.

He also dealt with groups of people called the Iuntju. Den celebrated special festivals called the Hebsed. These were big celebrations for his throne. One label shows him running a symbolic race. This was part of a ceremony involving the Apis bull. He even planned the building of new canals.

We know about Den because of the things he left behind. He was buried in a grand tomb at Umm El Qa'ab.
