His name is written with two special symbols. One symbol is a falcon, which is a bird called Horus. The other symbol is a mouth. Because of these signs, some people call his name "Horus mouth." Other experts think his name means "Companion of Horus."

For a long time, experts had a hard job deciding who he was. They were not sure if he was a real king. Some people thought he might be a slave or a chief. They thought his name might just mean "Spokesman." However, many researchers still believed he was a ruler. They looked for more clues to prove it. They wanted to know if he truly led the land.

New discoveries helped solve this mystery. In the 1980s and 1990s, workers dug at a place called Abydos.

They found his tomb in a large area of graves. This tomb had two underground rooms named B1 and B2. They even found a third room called B0 later on. The tomb was very large and shaped like royal tombs. It looked just like the tombs of later kings named Ka and Narmer. This size showed he was likely a king.

Many real objects prove he was a real leader. Experts found over 27 objects with his name on them. These included 22 pottery jars and some clay seals. One seal was even found in the tomb of King Narmer. In 2012, a new discovery was made in the Sinai.

An inscription was found on a rock there. It showed his name on a boat near the city of Memphis. This proved he ruled far to the north.

Iry-Hor's life helps us understand the very beginning of Egypt. He likely ruled before the famous kings of the First Dynasty. He probably ruled from a place called Hierakonpolis. He likely controlled the Thinite region and the Nile Delta too. His reign helped shape how the country worked. Today, he is listed in books about the first pharaohs. He is a key piece of Egypt's long story.
