It is a way to understand how people lived long ago.

Learning about Egypt has happened in many steps. First, the ancient Egyptians themselves were explorers. Thutmose IV led an excavation of the Great Sphinx of Giza. He even wrote about a dream he had on a stone called the Dream Stele. Later, Prince Khaemweset helped fix old buildings and tombs. He is often called the first Egyptologist. During the 3rd century BC, writers like Herodotus and Manetho wrote about Egypt.

These early accounts helped keep the stories alive.

In the Middle Ages, travelers visited Egypt on long trips. Some people thought the great Pyramids were granaries for Joseph. Later, Islamic scholars worked to save ancient knowledge. They tried to translate Egyptian texts into Arabic. In the 13th century, Abdul Latif al-Baghdadi wrote about old monuments. In the 15th century, the historian al-Maqrizi wrote detailed accounts too. These scholars helped connect the ancient world to the Islamic world. They made sure the history was not lost.

Modern Egyptology changed a lot in the late 1700s. Napoleon Bonaparte invaded Egypt during this time. In 1799, people found the Rosetta Stone. This was a very important discovery. In 1822, Jean-François Champollion deciphered Egyptian hieroglyphs. This meant people could finally read the ancient writing.

Other experts like Thomas Young and Ippolito Rosellini also became famous. Their work helped the study become more scientific and careful.

Many amazing things have been found recently. In 1922, Howard Carter found the tomb of King Tutankhamun.

Today, experts use modern tools like geophysical sensing. They even find lost cities under the sea. In 2000, Franck Goddio found the sunken city of Thonis-Heracleion. Archaeologists also find old mummies and statues in places like Saqqara. Every new find tells us more about the people of Egypt.
