In the 1700s, modern Egyptology began. Soldiers found the Rosetta Stone in 1799. This stone helped people read hieroglyphs. Hieroglyphs are ancient Egyptian symbols used for writing. Jean-François Champollion figured out how to read them in 1822. This changed everything for researchers.
