A music festival is a large community event centered on musical performances. These gatherings feature people singing or playing various instruments.

Most festivals follow a specific theme to guide the experience. A theme might focus on a musical genre like jazz, blues, folk, or classical music. Other festivals might highlight a specific nationality, a certain instrument, or a holiday. While many festivals happen outdoors under tents or temporary roofed stages, they are highly structured. They rely on extensive programming rather than spontaneous or improvised music.

Organizers create these events through various professional networks. These networks include music production scenes, the music industries, or institutions of music education. Some festivals are run as for-profit concerts to generate revenue. Others function as benefits for specific charitable causes. At charitable festivals, organizers may also share information regarding social or political issues. Beyond the music, these events often host diverse attractions. Visitors can find food and merchandise vending, dance, crafts, and performance art. These activities turn a concert into a full cultural experience.

Music education festivals offer a different kind of structured experience. These are often organized locally, regionally, or nationally for amateur musicians. Participants of all ages and skill levels enter to perform prepared songs. They play in front of an audience of family, friends, and community members.

A key part of this process is the role of the adjudicator. Adjudicators are judges, such as music professors or professional performers. They provide both verbal and written feedback to help musicians improve. Performers may receive certificates based on merit or ranking. Some may even win trophies or scholarships. The primary goal is for musicians to learn from each other in a supportive environment.

History shows that musical celebrations have existed for a very long time. The Pythian Games at Delphi are considered one of the earliest known festivals. During the Middle Ages, these gatherings often took the form of competitions. Modern music festivals emerged in England during the 18th century. They grew from urban concert life into seasonal cultural festivities. Today, these festivals have become a significant part of the global economy. For example, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival earned $115 million in 2017. Festivals also help cities build a brand to attract more visitors.

Scale and attendance vary greatly between different global events. Musikfest in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, is the largest free music festival in the United States. It attracts more than 1.3 million attendees every August. In Wisconsin, Summerfest has operated annually since 1968. It hosts over 800 musical acts and draws up to 1,000,000 people each year. The famous Woodstock Festival of 1969 drew nearly 500,000 people. In Europe, the Przystanek Woodstock festival in Poland drew 750,000 people in 2014. This made it the largest open-air annual festival in Europe.

Different types of festivals hold unique records for longevity or size. The Pinkpop Festival in the Netherlands is the oldest annual pop music festival. However, older genre-specific festivals exist, such as the Three Choirs Festival in the UK, which has run since 1719. The Glastonbury Festival has a capacity of about 275,000 spectators. It is known as the biggest non-annual greenfield festival because it takes "fallow years" roughly every five years.

In terms of physical area, the Queensland Music Festival in Australia is the largest. It is a state-wide biennial event that lasts for three weeks in July.

Music festivals serve many purposes in modern society. They provide a way for people to experience escapism through ritual and collective action. These events help create a sense of cultural identity and community belonging. For some, they offer a pathway to professional music studies at a university or conservatory.

For others, they are a way to express a specific lifestyle or achieve self-actualization. Whether through massive commercial events or small educational gatherings, festivals connect people through the shared experience of sound.
