Conventions can be social, professional, or political. They serve as essential tools for sharing knowledge and making important decisions. In the business world, the industry is often called MICE. This acronym stands for Meetings, Incentives, Conferencing, and Exhibitions. The "C" represents conventions, which is a very dynamic part of the tourism sector.

There are several distinct types of conventions based on their purpose. Trade conventions focus on specific industry segments. These events often feature keynote speakers and vendor displays. Professional conventions are organized by societies to discuss advancements in a career. Fan conventions center on pop culture and often include celebrity guests. Some people even hold conventions for specific hobbies like gaming or model railroads.

Large cities often build massive convention centers to host these large crowds.

In a technical sense, a convention is a meeting of delegates or representatives. A delegate is a person chosen to act for a larger group. For example, labor unions or fraternities send delegates to discuss common issues. Political conventions also use this model. In modern times, parties use them to select a candidate or a chairman. Even religious groups use this structure. The Southern Baptist Convention and the General Convention of the Episcopal Church are examples. Some legislative bodies, like the British House of Commons, are also considered conventions.

In the United States, conventions have a deep historical role in self-governance. They have been used to create constitutions and to amend them. One famous example is the Annapolis Convention held in September 1786. This meeting in Maryland addressed commerce issues between states. Alexander Hamilton used it to call for a larger meeting to fix the government. This led to the Philadelphia Convention from May to September 1787. That meeting resulted in the proposal of the new U.S. Constitution.

Conventions have also been vital for civil rights and social change. The First Amendment protects the right to hold these deliberative assemblies. The Seneca Falls Convention and the Rochester Women's Rights Convention of 1848 were very important. These meetings helped lead to the Nineteenth Amendment, which secured women's right to vote. Similarly, the Colored Conventions Movement helped African Americans organize for justice. These groups met to discuss the abolition of slavery and equal education. They used these gatherings to strategize for racial justice.

States also use conventions to manage shared interests and boundaries. These are sometimes called interstate commissions. They might resolve disputes over state borders or manage shared resources. For instance, the Colorado River Compact and the Delaware River Basin Commission are examples. There have been 233 state-level conventions in U.S. history. These meetings are used to revise or rewrite state constitutions. Delegates are elected specifically to participate in these state-level processes.

The U.S. Constitution also provides specific rules for different types of federal conventions. Under Article Four, Congress uses conventions to admit new states to the Union. So far, 31 states have been admitted this way. This process begins with an enabling act. Examples include the Enabling Act of 1864 for Nevada and the Enabling Act of 1906 for Oklahoma. Under Article Five, a special "Convention to propose amendments" can be called. This would happen if 34 states submit a formal request to Congress. While nearly 200 such applications exist, this specific type of convention has never occurred.
