A trade show, also called a trade fair or trade exposition, is a large-scale exhibition for specific industries.

Companies use these events to showcase their latest products and services. They also meet with industry partners and customers to build professional connections. These shows allow businesses to study the activities of their competitors. This helps them examine recent market trends and new opportunities. Trade shows are vital for marketing and business networking across many different sectors.

Trade shows are classified into different types based on who can attend. Some shows are "public," meaning they are open to everyone. Other shows are "trade only," which means only professionals and members of the press may enter. A few events are hybrids that combine both styles. For example, the Frankfurt Book Fair is trade only for its first three days. It then opens to the general public for its final two days.

The mechanism of a trade show involves a highly organized central floor. This floor is filled with booths where companies exhibit their goods or services. These booths can range from simple tables to very elaborate constructions.

Throughout the day, attendees can participate in seminars. These educational sessions cover industry matters like best practices, trends, and regulation. There are also shared meals with keynote speakers and social events in the evenings to encourage networking.

Participating in a trade show requires a massive investment of time and money. Companies must plan carefully by arranging meetings with other attendees before the event begins. They must also prepare resources to follow up on new opportunities created at the show. Financial costs include space rental and the design of booth displays. Companies also pay for telecommunications, travel, and promotional literature. At the event, they incur costs for electrical services, booth cleaning, internet, and drayage. Drayage is the professional handling of materials and equipment.

Modern trade shows follow a long tradition of trade fairs from late medieval Europe. During the era of merchant capitalism, producers visited towns to sell crafts and produce. These fairs often happened at geographically favorable locations. They were frequently held in conjunction with religious festivals to attract large crowds. From the late eighteenth century, industrial exhibitions became more common during the Industrial Revolution. By the late 19th century, annual industry-wide shows spread from Europe to North America. In the 20th century, specialized companies emerged to manage the industry. Permanent convention centers were also established to host a rotating calendar of shows.

Trade shows have a massive global presence and significant economic impact. In the United States alone, there are currently over 10,000 trade shows held every year. In Asia, the industry is growing rapidly due to industrialization. In 2011, China dominated the Asian exhibition industry by accounting for more than 55 per cent of all space sold in the region. Cities often promote these shows to encourage local economic development. The local spending on logistics helps local businesses grow and attracts new companies to the area.

Many famous shows attract hundreds of thousands of visitors. The BAUMA construction show in Munich saw 620,000 visitors in 2019. The CeBIT technology show in Hanover had 480,000 visitors in 2007.

Some events are even larger, such as the Cairo International Book Fair, which had 2,000,000 visitors in 2007. The Kolkata International Book Fair also reached 2,000,000 visitors in 2012. These large numbers show how important these gatherings are for global commerce.

Major venues around the world are designed to host these massive gatherings. The Hanover Fairground in Germany is the largest exhibition ground in the world. Other significant venues include the World Market Center in Las Vegas, which has 22,300 square meters of indoor floor area. The industry is connected to many different fields, from aerospace at the Dubai Airshow to music at Berlin Music Week. Whether they are small local events or massive international expos, trade shows keep the global market moving.
