Early German music began with religious and poetic traditions. In the 12th century, the mystic abbess Hildegard of Bingen wrote various Christian hymns. Later, the Minnesinger emerged as traveling love poets. These musicians were often aristocrats who moved between royal courts. They left behind a large collection of literature called Minnelieder.

Classical music in Germany grew through several distinct eras. The Baroque period featured complex styles like counterpoint. Johann Sebastian Bach was a master of this era. He used harmonic organization to create works like the Brandenburg Concertos.
