These events can feature a single musician or a large musical ensemble. A solo performance is often called a recital. Ensembles may include a choir, a band, or an orchestra. Concerts vary greatly in size and setting. They can take place in private homes or small nightclubs. Larger events occur in concert halls, arenas, or massive sports stadiums.

Some performances are held in outdoor venues like parks or amphitheaters. Regardless of the location, musicians usually perform on a designated stage. Large-scale shows often require professional audio equipment to support the live event.

The mechanics of a concert involve complex logistics and technical support. For large concerts or global tours, professional tour promoters manage the details. They must arrange the musicians, the venue, and the necessary equipment. They also handle the audience and the sale of tickets.

To increase the spectacle, theatrical concerts use many additional devices. Performers may use elaborate stage lighting and electronic imagery through an IMAG system. They might also use pre-recorded video, inflatable sets, or pyrotechnics like smoke and fog. Some popular singers even use pre-recorded accompaniment or broadcast vocal tracks to augment their live sound.

Concerts are categorized by their musical genre and the scale of the performers. Classical concerts generally fall into orchestral or choral styles. An orchestra can be a chamber orchestra with ten to forty members. A symphony orchestra is much larger, often containing eighty or more members. These large groups use strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion.

Choral styles include opera, musical theater, and choral music. Rock concerts can range from small clubs to huge stadiums. These shows are often performed at extremely high volume levels.

Other types include recitals, which focus on a single soloist or instrument. A dance recital presents choreographed moves for an audience.

The history of the concert began to take official shape in the late 17th century.

The English violinist John Banister created the first public concerts requiring admission in 1672. In 1678, Thomas Britton held weekly concerts in Clerkenwell using a yearly subscription model. For ten shillings a year, patrons could attend as many concerts as they wished. In France, Anne Danican Philidor organized the Concerts Spirituels. These were the first public concerts in France and served as a global model. By the 18th century, English concerts featured works by Haydn and Mozart. Following World War 2, concerts evolved into the modern formats we see today.

Music is often organized into specific formats like tours, residencies, or festivals. A concert tour is a series of performances in different cities or countries. These can become massive enterprises lasting months or even years.

In contrast, a residency is a series of concerts held at only one location. These are common in Las Vegas, such as Katy Perry's "Play" residency.

Music festivals involve many artists and often last for several days. Because of their size, festivals are almost always held outdoors. Some modern festivals even take place on cruise ships or at specific travel destinations.

The live music industry is a significant global economic force. In 2023, the global live music industry revenue was 28.6 billion U.S. dollars.

Ticket sales provide revenue for artists, producers, venues, and organizers. Some revenue also comes from in-concert advertising and sponsorships. For example, the 2009 Vans Warped Tour was presented by AT&T. Artists also earn money through the sale of merchandise. Individual tours can also be record-breaking. Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour in 2023 generated $1.04 billion in revenue. This tour averaged $17.3 million in revenue for every single show.

Attendance records demonstrate the massive scale of modern music culture.

Italian singer Vasco Rossi holds the record for the largest ticketed concert attendance. He sold 220,000 tickets for his 2017 show in Modena, Italy. Previously, Paul McCartney held the record with 185,000 people in 1990. For free concerts, Rod Stewart holds the record with 3.5 million people. This occurred during his 1994 New Year's Eve concert in Rio de Janeiro. While audiences enjoy these moments, performers may face psychological challenges. Many musicians experience stage fright or performance anxiety when playing for mass audiences.
