May is the fifth month of the year in both the Julian and Gregorian calendars. It consists of 31 days. The seasonal experience of May depends entirely on your location on Earth. In the Northern Hemisphere, May is a month of spring. In the Southern Hemisphere, the month marks the season of autumn. Because of this, May in the Southern Hemisphere is the seasonal equivalent of November in the Northern Hemisphere.

The name May comes from the Latin word Maius. One explanation is that it was named for the Greek goddess Maia. She was identified with the Roman goddess Bona Dea, who was a goddess of fertility. Bona Dea had a festival held in May. However, the Roman poet Ovid offered a different etymology. He suggested the month was named for the maiores, which is Latin for "elders." He claimed the following month, June, was named for the iuniores, or "young people."

Ancient Roman culture included many religious observances during this month. The festival of Bona Dea occurred on May 1. The Argei festival was held on May 14 or May 15. Agonalia took place on May 21, and Ambarvalia was held on May 29. The Lemuria festival fell on May 9, 11, and 13 under the Julian calendar. Other celebrations included the Rosalia, which was celebrated by the College of Aesculapius and Hygia on May 11 and May 22. Mercury also received a sacrifice on the Ides of May, which is May 15.

Celestial events can be observed in the sky during May. The Eta Aquariids meteor shower is visible from approximately April 21 to May 20. This shower reaches its peak activity on or around May 6. Another shower, the Arietids, appears from May 22 to July 2 and peaks on June 7. The Virginids also appear at various dates during the month. These predictable patterns allow astronomers and stargazers to prepare for sightings.

Two birth flowers are the Lily of the Valley and Crataegus monogyna. Both plants are native to the cool temperate Northern Hemisphere. The Lily of the Valley grows in Asia, Europe, and the southern Appalachian Mountains. Another notable plant is the Mayflower, or Epigaea repens. This North American plant is the floral emblem for both Nova Scotia and Massachusetts.

In modern times, May is used for many different observances and holidays. In the United States and Canada, late May marks the start of the summer vacation season. This includes Memorial Day in the U.S. and Victoria Day in Canada. In the Philippines, there is a celebration called Flores de Mayo. Many awareness months also occur in May, such as Mental Health Awareness Month. The green ribbon serves as the international symbol for mental health awareness.

Climate patterns in May have shown significant changes in recent decades. Data shows that the number of warm temperature records has outpaced cold temperature records. This trend has been observed over a growing portion of the Earth's surface. Scientists track these changes using global average temperature anomalies. This helps researchers understand how the planet's climate is shifting over time. The study of these patterns is vital for understanding long-term environmental shifts.
