June is the sixth month of the year in both the Julian and Gregorian calendars. The Gregorian calendar is the most widely used system in the world today. This month contains exactly 30 days and follows the month of May. It is the final month of the first half of the calendar year. June belongs to the second quarter, or Q2, of the year.

In the ISO week date system, June begins during the 22nd or 23rd week. Because of how the calendar is structured, no other month starts on the same day of the week as June. This makes the month a unique part of our yearly cycle.

The name June has deep roots in ancient history. It is derived from the Latin word Iunius. This name honors Juno, an ancient Roman goddess.

In the original Roman calendar, June was actually the fourth month. It originally had only 29 days. Scholars believe the Romans reset the calendar so that January and February came first around 153 BC. This shift moved June to the sixth position. Over time, the spelling changed through Anglo-Norman and Middle English forms before reaching its modern version.

Calendar reforms changed how we track June over many centuries. In 46 BC, Julius Caesar introduced the Julian calendar. This reform fixed the year at 365 days and added a leap year every four years. It also established June as a 30-day month. Later, in AD 65, the month was briefly renamed Germanicus to honor the emperor Nero. In AD 184, Emperor Commodus renamed it Aelius, but this did not last. Finally, in 1582, Pope Gregory XIII introduced the Gregorian calendar. This new system adjusted the average year length to 365.2425 days to better match the solar year.

June is a month of significant astronomical events. The June solstice occurs between June 20 and June 22. In the Northern Hemisphere, this is the summer solstice, marking the longest day of the year. In the Southern Hemisphere, it is the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year.

North of the Arctic Circle, the midnight sun occurs during this time. This means the Sun remains visible even at midnight. Conversely, the Antarctic Circle experiences polar night, where the Sun stays below the horizon for over 24 hours. The full moon in June is often called the strawberry moon because it coincides with strawberry-picking season.

Weather and climate patterns also shift during this month. In the Northern Hemisphere, June is one of the hottest months. In the Southern Hemisphere, it is one of the coldest.
