April is the fourth month of the year in both the Gregorian and Julian calendars. It consists of exactly 30 days. In the Northern Hemisphere, April is most commonly associated with the season of spring. In the Southern Hemisphere, the month marks the season of autumn. This seasonal relationship makes April in the North the equivalent of October in the South.

Recent scientific observations show significant changes in global temperatures during this month. In recent decades, the number of warm temperature records has outpaced cold temperature records. This trend is occurring over a growing portion of the Earth's surface. Data adjusted to the pre-industrial reference period of 1850–1900 shows these shifts in global average temperature anomalies.

The etymology, or origin of the name, remains a subject of debate among historians. The traditional theory is that it comes from the Latin verb "aperire," which means "to open." This refers to the way trees and flowers begin to open during the spring season. This connection is similar to the modern Greek word "ánixi," which also means opening. Other theories suggest the name might be linked to the goddess Venus. Because April 1st was the day of her festival, the Veneralia, some believe the name was originally "Aphrilis."

April's place in the calendar has shifted through various historical reforms. In the earliest Roman calendar, April was actually the second month. It was placed before January and February. Around 700 BC, King Numa Pompilius made the month 29 days long. During the time of the decemvirs around 450 BC, it became the fourth month. Later, in the mid-40s BC, Julius Caesar reformed the calendar to create the Julian calendar. This reform added the 30th day back to the month.

He stated it was named after the goddess Eostre. In Finland, the name "huhtikuu" means "slash-and-burn moon." This refers to felling gymnosperms to clear farmland. In Slovenia, the traditional name "mali traven" describes the month when plants start growing.
