April is the fourth month of the year in our modern calendars.

It always has 30 days. In the Northern Hemisphere, this month is known for the spring season. In the Southern Hemisphere, it is actually the time for autumn. This means the seasons are opposite depending on where you live. Recently, scientists have noticed a change in the weather during this month. Warm temperature records are being broken more often than cold ones.

This trend is happening across more of the Earth's surface.

The name of the month has a very interesting story. Many people believe it comes from the Latin word "aperire." This word means "to open." It describes how trees and flowers begin to open during the spring.

Some people think it might be named after the goddess Venus. April 1st was a special day for her called Veneralia. Other ideas suggest it comes from a god named Aper or Aprus. In Finland, the name means "slash-and-burn moon." This refers to people clearing land for farms. In Slovenia, the traditional name means the month when plants start growing.

The way we count the months has changed many times. Long ago, April was only the second month in the Roman calendar. King Numa Pompilius changed it to be 29 days long about 700 BC. Later, around 450 BC, it became the fourth month. At that time, it had only 29 days. Julius Caesar changed the calendar again in the mid-40s BC. He added the 30th day back to the month. This work helped create what we call the Julian calendar. This length stayed the same even when Augustus Caesar made changes in 8 BC.

There are many special things to look for in April. If you look at the night sky, you might see meteors. The Lyrids meteor shower happens from April 16 to April 26. The brightest part usually happens around April 22. You can also see the Eta Aquariids meteor shower. This one is visible from April 21 until May 20.

Another shower called the Pi Puppids appears on April 23. These streaks of light are wonderful to watch. Some people also celebrate many different holidays during this time.

April has its own special symbols that people recognize. The birthstone for anyone born in this month is the diamond.

There are also two birth flowers to know. One is the common daisy and the other is the sweet pea. In the stars, people look at the signs of Aries and Taurus. The sign of Aries lasts until April 19. After that, the sign changes to Taurus on April 20. Many traditions also use April for special religious days. In many churches, it is known as the Month of the Resurrection.
