Lent is a solemn season for many Christians.

It lasts for 40 days. This time helps people prepare for Easter. The name Lent comes from an old word for spring.

Many groups follow this tradition. This includes Catholic, Lutheran, and Anglican churches. Some others, like Baptist churches, may not observe it.

Lent is based on stories from the Bible. In these stories, Jesus spent 40 days in the desert. He fasted and prayed during that time. Other people in the Bible, like Moses and Elijah, also fasted for 40 days.

People use Lent to grow closer to God. They do this in three main ways. First, they use prayer. Second, they use fasting. Fasting means eating less food or skipping certain meals. Some people eat only vegetarian food. Third, they use almsgiving. This means giving to those in need. Some people also give up luxuries. They might give up a favorite treat. This is called a Lenten sacrifice.
