These groups are not just one single church. They have many different beliefs and ways to pray. Some use the Byzantine Rite. Others use the Armenian or Syriac Rites. These are special ways to lead worship.

One large group is the Eastern Orthodox Church. It has about 220 million followers. Many members live in Eastern Europe and Turkey. Another group is the Oriental Orthodox. They have about 60 million members.

The Church of the East is also very old. Long ago, it spread all the way to China. Today, many of its members are ethnic Assyrians. Some Eastern churches also join with Rome. These are called Eastern Catholic Churches.

In many of these churches, priests can marry. They also do special rites for babies. These traditions have lasted for many centuries.
