During the Protestant Reformation, new ideas grew in the church. Many people call these ideas the "five solae." The word "sola" means "alone" in Latin. These ideas help people understand how to be close to God.

One idea is "sola scriptura." This means "by scripture alone." It says the Bible is the main authority. It is the way to know what God wants.

Another idea is "sola fide." This means "by faith alone." It says people connect to God through their faith.

There is also "sola gratia." This means "by grace alone." It means salvation is a free gift from God. You do not earn it by doing good works.

Some people add "solus Christus." This means "Christ alone." It teaches that Jesus is the only way to God. Others add "soli Deo gloria." This means "glory to God alone." It says all praise belongs to God, not to people. These ideas were not written as a single list until much later. They help different groups of Christians explain their faith.
