It is a way for sinners to be right with God. Different groups have different ideas about how this works.

Some groups, like Lutherans, see it as a legal change. They believe God credits goodness to a person's account. This happens through faith alone. In this view, good deeds come after the gift. They do not make the gift happen.

Other groups, like Catholics and Orthodox Christians, have a different view. They believe God pours grace into a person's soul. This fills them with goodness over time. They often see this starting at baptism. For them, faith and good works go together.

Some groups, like Anabaptists, see it as a way to live like Jesus. It is a process that changes a person.

People also disagree on if this gift can be lost. Some think sin can take it away. Others believe it stays forever. In 1999, many groups found they could agree on basic truths.
