In many Christian beliefs, grace is a gift from God. It is a free gift that people cannot earn. The word grace comes from a Greek word. That word means joy or good fortune.

Many groups have different ideas about grace. Western Christians see grace as God's favor. They believe it helps people become part of God's life. Eastern Orthodox Christians have a different view. They see grace as the working of God himself. It is not a thing that can be bought or sold.

People use different ways to find grace. Some use prayer or good works. Others use sacraments. A sacrament is a special holy act. For Catholics, the Eucharist is a main way to find grace. Lutherans also use sacraments to find grace.

There are many debates about how grace works. Some think people are helpless without it. Others believe people work with God's grace. This idea is called synergism. John Cassian was a thinker who taught this. He said people must work together with God. This helps them grow in their faith.
