The word catholic comes from a Greek word. It means "universal" or "general."

This idea means a faith is whole and complete. It is for all people and all groups. Many Christian groups use this word to describe themselves. They believe their faith has a long history. They want to stay connected to the early church.

Some groups have different ways of being catholic. The Roman Catholic Church is one large group. Other groups, like the Eastern Orthodox Church, also use the term. Some Protestant groups, like Lutherans, use it too. They believe they follow the same old truths. They call themselves heirs of the apostolic faith. This means they follow the teachings of the apostles.

Many of these groups share special ways to worship. They might use bread and wine in a service. This is called the Eucharist. They may also use candles, music, or incense. Some use the sign of the cross.

They also use sacraments. These are special acts that show God's grace. One common act is baptism. Baptism is often the first step in a person's faith.
