Crêpe

language culture Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A crêpe is a very thin pancake made from a light batter.

People all over the world love them because they can be many things. You can make them sweet or you can make them savoury. Sweet crêpes are great for breakfast or a tasty dessert. You might fill them with fruit, sugar, or even whipped cream. Savoury crêpes use salty fillings like cheese, ham, or eggs.

Some people even use buckwheat flour for these salty versions. This special flour is gluten-free for people with wheat allergies.

Making these treats is a quick and fun process.

First, you mix flour, eggs, milk, and salt into a thin liquid. Some older recipes even used wine or beer instead of milk. You pour one ladle of batter into a hot, greased pan. The liquid is thin so it spreads into a wide layer. It cooks very fast, usually in 20 to 30 seconds per side. Once it is golden, you flip it over to finish. You can then fold the edges over the yummy fillings.

Crêpes have a very long and interesting history. The name comes from a French word meaning "curled" or "wrinkled."

In France, they celebrate a special day on February 2. This day is called Le Jour des Crêpes. Long ago, in the year 472, Pope Gelasius I gave bread to pilgrims. Later, this tradition changed into eating crêpes instead. Many people see the golden, round shape as a symbol of the sun. It also represents the circle of life as winter turns to spring.

There are many special ways to eat crêpes today.

You can stack many thin layers to make a mille-crêpe cake. The word "mille" means a thousand, which shows how many layers there are. A baker named Emy Wada made these cakes very popular in Japan. In the United States, some people eat 49er flapjacks.

Crêpes connect many different cultures across the globe.
