language culture Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A crêpe is a very thin pancake.

You make them with a thin batter. This batter uses flour, eggs, milk, and salt. You pour it into a hot, greased pan. It cooks very fast in just 20 to 30 seconds on each side.

There are two main kinds of crêpes. Sweet crêpes are often eaten for breakfast or dessert. You can add fruit, sugar, or whipped cream. Savoury crêpes are salty. They often have fillings like cheese, ham, or eggs. Some savoury crêpes use buckwheat flour. This flour is gluten-free. This helps people with a wheat allergy.

In France, people celebrate a special day on February 2. They call it Le Jour des Crêpes.

The golden, round shape of the crêpe represents the sun. Some people even flip a crêpe with a coin in their hand! They say this brings good luck and wealth.

You can even make a cake out of them. These are called mille-crêpes. The word mille means "a thousand."
