Whipped cream is a light and fluffy dairy treat.

It is made by whisking high-fat cream until it holds its shape. This process adds air into the cream to make it a soft solid. People often add white sugar or vanilla to make it taste sweet. It is a wonderful topping for many different desserts. You might see it on fruit, cakes, or pies.

It is also great on hot chocolate or coffee. In Vienna, coffee with whipped cream is called Melange mit Schlagobers.

To make good whipped cream, you need special ingredients. You must use cream with a high fat content. This is usually between 30% and 36% butterfat. The fat helps to trap tiny air bubbles inside the cream. You can use a whisk or an electric mixer to do the work. It is best to keep your tools and cream very cold. If you whip it for too long, it will turn into butter. The cream can grow to twice its original size during this time.

People have enjoyed creamy treats for a very long time. In the 16th century, people called it "milk snow."

One old recipe from the Netherlands used a woody switch to beat the cream. They added rosewater and sugar to the mix. Another recipe from London in 1545 used egg whites and cream. This special dish was sometimes served on a bush of rosemary. It was even decorated with gold for big banquets.

There are many different names for this creamy treat. Some people call it Chantilly cream. This name became common in the 19th century. Some think it comes from the Château de Chantilly in France. In the 1930s, new ways to make it were invented. Inventors like Charles Getz and Marshall Reinecke used gas to make bubbles. This created the instant cream you find in aerosol cans today. In Scotland, people sometimes call this "skooshy cream."

Not everyone uses dairy to make these fluffy toppings. Some people use non-dairy versions called whipped topping.

These are good for people who do not eat dairy. An early recipe from 1904 used almond butter instead of cream. Later, companies made toppings using soy or coconut oil. These versions can be found in cans or frozen tubs. Whether it is made from milk or coconut, it is a delicious way to finish a meal.
