There are different ways these products work. Powdered creamers are dry and granular. You do not need a fridge to store them. Liquid creamers are different and must be kept cold. You should keep the cap tight after you open them. Many creamers use vegetable oils to feel like milk fat. Some also use solidified corn syrup as a sweetener. These ingredients help the drink feel good in your mouth.

Scientists worked for many years to make these products.

Rex Diamond worked with soy protein from 1943 to 1945. He wanted a soy cream that would not form lumps. In 1946, Frank S. Mitchell and Diamond made a whipped topping. Mitchell also made a creamer called Perx. Then, in 1950, Melvin Morse and Dick Borne made Mocha Mix. This was the first product to use the name "coffee creamer."

Many famous brands grew from these early ideas. In 1952, a powder called Pream was sold. It was made from sugar and dehydrated cream. It did not dissolve very easily in hot water. In 1958, the Carnation Company made a better version. They used vegetable oil instead of most milk fat. They released the brand Coffee-Mate in 1961. Soon after, Borden launched Cremora in 1963.

It is important to know what is inside the container. Many creamers use sodium caseinate, which is a milk protein. Because of this, some vegans do not eat it. Some Jewish groups also follow rules about mixing milk and meat. People with milk allergies should always check the label. The FDA says these products might have tiny amounts of lactose. Even so, the amount is usually too small for most people.
