This process brings out many flavors like bright citrus or floral notes. People enjoy coffee for its aroma and its unique mouthfeel. You can change the drink by adding sweeteners or dairy products. Milk can make the drink feel thicker in your mouth. Sweeteners can help hide bitter or sharp tastes.

The way you prepare coffee follows four main steps. First, you must roast the raw green beans. Next, you grind those roasted beans into smaller pieces. Then, you mix the grounds with hot or cold water. This step is called brewing, and it happens for a specific time. Finally, you separate the liquid from the used grounds. Some people add toppings like shaved chocolate at the very end.

Roasting changes how the beans look and act. As the beans absorb heat, they turn yellow and then brown. They can grow to nearly double their original size. Oils also appear on the surface of the bean during this time. You can use a special coffee roaster for this job. You can even use a frying pan or an oven at home.

There are many ways to grind your beans. A burr grinder uses two hard parts to crush the beans. This creates a very even size for the grounds. A blade grinder uses spinning blades to chop the beans quickly. Some people use a mortar and pestle to pound beans into a fine powder. This is how people make Greek coffee.

Different tools change how the coffee tastes. A French press is one of the oldest and simplest tools. You might also use a drip coffee maker. Some machines are totally automatic and do everything for you. People in Japan and South Korea often enjoy canned coffee. In hot places, many people prefer iced coffee to stay refreshed.
