People love it because it offers many different tastes and textures. You might find it as a simple chilled drink or as a sweet dessert. In Italy, people enjoy affogato, which is a dessert. It features a scoop of vanilla gelato, or Italian ice cream, topped with espresso.

Some people like it with thick foam or even ice cream on top. This variety makes it a special treat for many people around the world.

There are a few main ways to make this drink. One way is to brew hot coffee and then pour it over ice. Because melting ice can make the drink taste weak, many people brew it at a higher strength. For example, Starbucks uses a double-strength method with twice the coffee grounds.

Another way is called cold brew coffee. This method uses no heat at all. Instead, you soak coffee grounds in lukewarm water for several hours. Then, you strain out the grounds to leave a strong coffee concentrate.

People have been enjoying cold coffee for a long time. A drink called Mazagran started in Algeria around 1840. It was made with coffee syrup and cold water.

Later, in the late 19th century, iced coffee began to appear on menus and in recipe books. In the United States, a group called the Joint Coffee Trade Publicity Committee helped make iced coffee very popular in 1920. Since then, many famous coffee shops and fast-food chains have sold it to people everywhere.

Different countries have very special versions of iced coffee. In Greece, the popular frappé is made by mixing instant coffee, water, and sugar. You can use a mixer to create a thick foam on top.

In Vietnam, a traditional recipe uses a drip filter. Hot water passes through the grounds into a cup of sweet condensed milk. In Thailand, the drink often includes heavy cream and a hint of cardamom. Australia also has a famous packaged version that is a sweet, milky drink.

Iced coffee connects many different cultures through one simple ingredient. Whether it is a creamy milkshake style in an Australian café or a snowy slush in Italy, the drink changes based on local tastes. In Japan, people have enjoyed cold coffee in coffeehouses since the Taishō period. Some people even drink it from cans, which became common after 1969. No matter how it is made, iced coffee is a way for people to enjoy a cool, flavorful break.
