It can be served hot or cold. When it is cold, people call it Thai iced tea. Some people even add tapioca pearls. This turns the drink into bubble tea. This drink is a special part of Thai food culture.

Making the drink follows a few simple steps. First, you brew the tea very strongly. Most people use Ceylon black tea. Some use a local tea called bai miang.

Next, you add sugar to make it sweet. Then you add condensed milk. To make it look creamy, you pour milk over the ice. This can be evaporated milk or whole milk. Some vendors even blend it into a slushy frappé.

There are many different ways to enjoy this tea.

Cold dark Thai iced tea has no milk. It only uses sugar for sweetness. You might also try lime Thai tea. This version uses lime and sugar. Some people even add mint for a fresh taste. There is also a traditional herbal tea. This version comes from Thai traditional medicine. You can even find Thai Oolong tea. This kind uses ginger, lemongrass, and celery.

People in Thailand drink tea in many ways.

In the morning, many people drink hot tea. They often eat it with pathongko. These are long strips of fried dough. In restaurants, the tea comes in a tall glass. However, street stalls do things differently. They might pour the tea over crushed ice. They often serve it in a tall plastic cup. Sometimes, they even put it in a plastic bag.

Thai tea connects to many other traditions.

The dark iced tea is based on traditional Indian tea. This tea is a main ingredient for that style. One famous brand is called ChaTraMue. This brand helped make the tea famous around the world. Whether it is hot or cold, the tea is a treat. It shows how many ways people can enjoy the same tea leaves. Each version offers a new way to taste Thailand.
