It is famous for its small serving size. Most cups hold only 25 to 30 ml of liquid. You might notice a beautiful layer of light foam on top. This foam is called crema. It is made from the oils in the coffee beans. Because of this, espresso feels thick in your mouth. It has a texture similar to warm honey.

Many people enjoy the intense flavor it brings to a morning.

Making a great espresso is a careful way of working.

First, a person called a barista must grind the beans very finely. They then use a tool to tamp the grounds. Tamping means packing and leveling the coffee in a holder. Next, a machine forces hot water through the grounds using high pressure. This happens very quickly in about 25 to 30 seconds. The water must be at just the right temperature. The barista also watches the pressure to ensure a perfect shot.

People have been perfecting coffee in Italy for a long time. Coffee first arrived in Italy during the 16th century. By the 1880s, inventors wanted to make coffee faster for customers. In 1884, an inventor named Angelo Moriondo patented a machine. It used steam to move water through coffee grounds. Later, in 1901, Luigi Bezzera created a machine for individual servings. He used a boiler to make steam for the water. Desiderio Pavoni bought these ideas in 1903 to sell the first commercial machines.

Technology changed how espresso tasted and looked over the years. Early machines used steam, but the coffee often tasted burnt. In 1938, Achille Gaggia used a piston to create more pressure. This new method created the creamy foam we know today.

In 1961, Ernesto Valente invented the Faema E61 machine. This was a huge step forward for coffee shops. It used an electric pump to reach 9 bars of pressure. This machine made it much easier for baristas to work. It also allowed them to talk to customers more easily.

Today, espresso is the heart of many popular drinks.

You can use it as a base for a cappuccino or a caffè latte. Some people enjoy an americano, which is espresso with water. Even though espresso has more caffeine per unit, a small cup has less total caffeine than a large drip coffee. A single espresso has about 65 mg of caffeine. In contrast, a large drip coffee often has 95 mg. This makes espresso a wonderful way to enjoy a rich, complex flavor.
