Most people enjoy it because it has a lovely, balanced taste. It combines rich espresso with sweet, steamed milk and a thick layer of foam. In many places, people like to add a little extra flavor on top. In Europe and Australasia, they often use cocoa powder. In the United States and South Korea, people often use cinnamon. This drink is usually smaller than a caffè latte. A traditional cappuccino is served in a small cup with a handle.

Making a cappuccino is a special process that uses an espresso machine. First, a barista pours a shot of espresso into the bottom of the cup. This can be a single, double, or even a triple shot. Next, they use a steam wand to heat and texture the milk. The steam wand makes the milk hot and creates bubbles for the foam. The barista pours the hot milk into the espresso. Finally, they add a thick layer of foam to the top. Some baristas pour the milk and foam together to save time.

The history of this drink is very interesting and goes back many years. The name comes from the Capuchin friars who wore red-brown robes.

The color of the coffee looks just like those special robes. An early version was called Kapuziner coffee in Vienna during the 18th century. That version used whipped cream and spices instead of steamed milk.

Later, the drink moved into northern Italy. It may have spread through the port city of Trieste in the early 20th century.

This happened after the Austro-Hungarian Empire was in control of that area.

There are many specific facts about how people drink cappuccino today. In Italy, a cappuccino is usually made of equal parts espresso, milk, and foam. The total size is usually between 150 ml and 180 ml. Italians often drink it in the morning during breakfast. They usually stop drinking it by 11:00 am. This is because they think the milk is too heavy for later in the day. In the United States, large coffee chains often serve much larger versions.

Since the year 2000, baristas have even competed in the World Barista Championships. In these contests, judges look for a perfect balance of milk and espresso.

You might notice many other drinks that are similar to a cappuccino. A caffè latte is a larger drink that uses more milk. A macchiato is much smaller and only has a tiny bit of milk. There is also a Spanish drink called a cortado that uses a different milk ratio. In Australia and New Zealand, many people love a drink called a flat white. This drink has steamed milk but very little foam on top.
