A ball gown is a beautiful dress for formal events. People wear them to grand balls or special parties. Most gowns feature a low neckline that shows the shoulders. They often have long, puffy skirts that flow outward. To complete the look, people might wear long white gloves. They may also add fancy jewelry or a soft shawl. Some women even wear a tiara or a bow. These dresses are made of lovely fabrics like silk and satin. You might see shiny sequins, soft lace, or pretty pearls.

Making a ball gown involves many careful steps. Designers pick fine materials like velvet or taffeta. They use trimmings like ribbons, ruffles, or embroidery to add detail. Some gowns use ruching, which is a way of gathering fabric. In the past, a corset helped keep the waist tight. This helped the wearer keep very straight posture. Today, designers must plan carefully for special events. They want to make sure no two people match. They also know that the internet and cameras will see their work.

Fashion has changed many times over the years. In the 1850s, gowns had full skirts held up by petticoats. The invention of the sewing machine made making dresses much faster. New chemical dyes also allowed for many more colors. During the Victorian era, some skirts grew very full in the back. From 1868 to 1878, people used a bustle to create that shape. Later, the hourglass shape became popular with a narrow waist. In 1947, Christian Dior introduced his famous "New Look" style. This style used nipped-in waistlines and very full skirts.

Different cultures have their own special ways to wear gowns. A debutante ball is a party to show young women are growing up. In the United States, these styles can vary by place. In New Orleans, girls might wear jeweled crowns. In San Antonio, dresses can be very heavy with beads. Some of these beaded dresses weigh about 75 pounds! In Latin American cultures, girls wear bright gowns for a quinceañera. This is a special celebration when a girl turns 15. These gowns often have many ruffles or ruched skirts.

Some very important dresses are kept in museums. In 1912, Helen Taft helped start the First Ladies Collection. This collection is kept at the Smithsonian Institution. It is a tradition for the First Lady to donate her inauguration dress. Usually, the dress is given after the president leaves office. However, people wanted to see Mamie Eisenhower's dress so much in 1955. The museum changed its rules to add her dress right away. Now, these gowns help us see the history of our leaders.
