Haute couture is a very special way of making clothes. The name comes from French words that mean "high sewing."

These outfits are not made in large factories for everyone to buy. Instead, they are custom-fitted for specific people. This means the clothes are made to fit one person perfectly. Designers use very expensive and unusual fabrics to make them. This kind of fashion is seen as a high art form.

Making these clothes is a slow and careful job. It happens in a workshop called an atelier.

Skilled workers use many hand-made techniques that take a long time. They might use silk, which comes from silkworms. Some silk, like chiffon, is very thin and flows easily. They also use fine wool from animals like sheep or goats. Designers must be very careful when they dye wool. This is because wool absorbs color very quickly.

The history of this craft goes back a long time. In the 17th century, women dressmakers were called couturières. They made fine dresses for royal families and rich people. One very important person was Charles Frederick Worth. He lived in France but was born in England. People call him the father of haute couture.

He was the first to show designs on live models. This changed how people thought about dressmaking. It turned the maker into a true artist.

Today, there are strict rules to use the name haute couture. These rules are protected by French law. A fashion house must have an atelier in Paris. They must employ at least fifteen full-time staff members. They also need at least 20 technical people working there. Every season, they must show 50 original designs to the public. This happens twice a year, in January and July. Many famous names like Chanel and Dior are part of this world.

You might see haute couture at big, famous events. One example is the Met Gala in New York City. This is a huge night for high fashion. Even though these clothes are very expensive, they help many brands. Many fashion houses make "ready-to-wear" clothes for more people. These are easier to buy than custom pieces. However, the beautiful style of haute couture gives those clothes a sense of glamour. It connects the art of the workshop to the clothes we see every day.
