People use dance notation to write down movement. This can use symbols, numbers, or even letters. A dance score is the written record of a dance. These scores help us study old dances. They also help us perform them again.

Some systems work for all kinds of movement. Others are for one specific style. For example, Kahnotation is just for tap dance. Tango Notation is made for Argentine tango. In the 1680s, Pierre Beauchamp made a system for Baroque dance. This was called Beauchamp–Feuillet notation. It was used for many years. Another famous set of scores is the Sergeyev Collection. It used a method by Vladimir Stepanov. This collection saved dances like Swan Lake. It helped people perform them outside of Russia. In 1956, the Benesh system was published. It is used a lot to restage dance works. Later, a computer system called DOM was made. It showed a moving figure on a screen. These tools help keep the art of dance alive.
